Biofilm Minutes - Water management in Steel Mills

Watch the new episode of the web series by ALVIM!

Water is essential in steel production, supporting cooling, gas cleaning, descaling, and finishing processes. Modern mills use complex closed-loop systems to improve efficiency and reduce consumption, but maintaining water quality remains challenging. Warm temperatures, suspended solids, and nutrients promote microbial growth and biofilm formation on pipes and heat exchangers. These biofilms reduce heat transfer efficiency, increase energy demand, accelerate corrosion, and cause fouling, while also posing health risks such as Legionella. Effective water management requires continuous monitoring and targeted treatment. Advanced tools, including real-time biofilm detection, enable early intervention, optimize chemical use, improve reliability, reduce costs, and enhance sustainability.
